Players bought:

- Saurav Chauhan
How the auction went:
Requirements before the auction: A rebuild of the bowling attack
Royal Challengers Bangalore released Wanindu Hasaranga, Harshal Patel, and Josh Hazlewood, indicating their need for a major overhaul in the bowling department. However, the acquisition of Cameron Green in a trade meant they had limited funds for marquee fast bowlers. Their desperation was evident when they bid as much as INR 20.25 crores for Pat Cummins, who eventually went to Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Unfortunately, RCB was at the mercy of the auction order, with teams like Gujarat Titans (GT) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) having larger budgets. As a result, they couldn't secure Mitchell Starc, a player they desired to have back at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. They adjusted their strategy and acquired Alzarri Joseph for INR 11.50 crores. Joseph has proven to be effective in the middle overs but has struggled with economy in the death overs. Their attempts to sign Nuwan Thushara, also known as 'Baby Malinga', for addressing the death overs concerns were unsuccessful. Lockie Ferguson and Tom Curran were signed as overseas pace backups, but neither has a remarkable record in the death overs. RCB also signed left-armer Yash Dayal for INR 5 crores to replace Harshal Patel. However, they still appear lacking in quality spin resources, with only Swapnil Singh joining their squad alongside Mayank Dagar, Mahipal Lomror, Karn Sharma, and Glenn Maxwell.

- Anshul Kamboj
- Naman Dhir
- Shreyas Gopal
- Dilshan Madushanka
- Gerald Coetzee
- Mohammad Nabi
- Shivalik Sharma
How the auction went:
Requirements before the auction: A couple of overseas fast bowlers, backup Indian spinner, backup Indian allrounder
Mumbai Indians targeted fast bowlers in the auction and successfully added three overseas talents to complement Jasprit Bumrah. Dilshan Madushanka, a star of the World Cup, was acquired for INR 4.60 crores, and they also secured the promising South African player Gerald Coetzee. Both signings were completed for a combined price less than INR 10 crores, which proved to be a smart move.
There was a surprise addition in the form of Nuwan Thushara, for whom they engaged in a bidding war. Thushara has been compared to Lasith Malinga and Matheesha Pathirana for his action, and it will be interesting to see if MI unleashes him at some point during the season.
Finding a like-for-like backup for Hardik Pandya was a challenge, but MI added a few uncapped players to their squad. Strengthening the spin department within their budget constraints was also difficult, but they managed to secure Shreyas Gopal and Mohammad Nabi as backups.
IPL 2024 Auction: How the teams fared
Delhi Capitals

- Rishabh Pant (c)
- David Warner
- Prithvi Shaw
- Yash Dhull
- Abishek Porel

Players bought:
- Harry Brook
- Tristan Stubbs
- Ricky Bhui
- Kumar Kushagra
- Rasikh Dar
- Jhye Richardson
- Sumit Kumar
- Swastik Chikara
- Shai Hope
How the auction went:
Requirements before the auction: An Indian wicketkeeper, overseas fast bowler as backup, Indian finisher, backup overseas batter
Delhi Capitals managed to fulfill all their requirements in the auction. They secured a backup overseas batter early on by acquiring Harry Brook at a good price. Despite Brook's underwhelming performance for Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2023, DC managed to buy him for INR 4 crores. Additional options for the middle order were also pursued, with the signings of Tristan Stubbs and Shai Hope.
There are doubts about Rishabh Pant's role as wicketkeeper for IPL 2024, which could lead to Stubbs or Hope taking over the gloves. The addition of Kumar Kushagra, who was one of the surprise picks of the evening at a high price of INR 7.20 crores, indicates DC's intent to strengthen the wicketkeeper position. Interestingly, they also added Ricky Bhui and Sumit Kumar, further emphasizing the possibility of Pant playing solely as a batsman.
With Anrich Nortje recovering from a long-term injury, DC brought in Jhye Richardson to bolster their pace bowling options. Whether or not Kushagra takes the gloves, he may be considered as one of the finishers for DC, unless they find an overseas slot for Stubbs.

- Jonny Bairstow
- Prabhsimran Singh
- Liam Livingstone

Players bought:
- Harshal Patel
- Chris Woakes
- Ashutosh Sharma
- Shashank Singh
- Vishwanath Pratap Singh
- Tanay Thyagarajann
- Prince Choudhary
- Rilee Rossouw
How the auction went:
Requirements before the auction: A frontline pacer and backup for batters
Punjab Kings should be satisfied with their purchases from the auction in terms of addressing their needs. They went all out to acquire Harshal Patel to strengthen their fast bowling and provide a reliable option for death overs alongside Arshdeep Singh and Kagiso Rabada. They also made significant bids for Rilee Rossouw and Chris Woakes, although these two players are unlikely to get many opportunities in the starting XI initially. They serve as solid backups for Jonny Bairstow and Sam Curran, respectively. The spin department, led by Rahul Chahar and Harpreet Singh, was reinforced with lesser-known names, and their performance will be an interesting aspect to watch.
Punjab Kings also tried to secure the return of Shahrukh Khan but eventually gave up and signed Shashank Singh instead. Given the presence of strong hard-hitting batters in their squad, Singh may not feature frequently in the playing XI.
Overall, PBKS have once again formed a strong team on paper after the auction, which has historically been indicative of their performances in the tournament.
IPL 2024 Auction: How the teams fared
Kolkata Knight Riders
Current squad:
- Shreyas Iyer (c)
- Nitish Rana
- Rinku Singh
- Rahmanullah Gurbaz
- Sunil Narine
- Jason Roy
- Suyash Sharma
- Anukul Roy
- Andre Russell
- Venkatesh Iyer
- Harshit Rana
- Vaibhav Arora

Players bought:
- KS Bharat
- Chetan Sakariya
- Mitchell Starc
- Angkrish Raghuvanshi
- Ramandeep Singh
- Sherfane Rutherford
- Manish Pandey
- Mujeeb Rahman
- Gus Atkinson
- Sakib Hussain
How the auction went:
Requirements before the auction: Indian wicketkeeper, experienced pacers, backups for all departments except spin
Kolkata Knight Riders will be mostly satisfied with their performance in the auction. While the hefty INR 24.75 crore spent on Mitchell Starc will generate headlines, KKR addressed their needs for the most part. The early signings of Chetan Sakariya and Starc, followed by the late addition of Gus Atkinson, significantly strengthened their pace department. The inclusion of Sakib Hussain, a relatively untested talent in T20 cricket, adds an interesting dynamic to their death bowling capabilities.
In terms of batting, KKR already had a strong core, but the acquisitions of Ramandeep Singh, Sherfane Rutherford, and Manish Pandey provide additional depth and power. Mujeeb ur Rahman adds strength to what is arguably the strongest spin attack in the competition. However, their opening options remain a concern, with only an inexperienced backup in Angkrish Raghuvanshi.
The only Indian wicketkeeper signed by KKR was KS Bharat.
Sunrisers Hyderabad
Players retained:
- Aiden Markram (c)
- Abdul Samad
- Rahul Tripathi
- Glenn Phillips
- Heinrich Klaasen

- Shahbaz Ahmed (traded)
- Abhishek Sharma
- Marco Jansen
- Washington Sundar

- Fazahaq Farooqi
Players bought:
- Travis Head
- Wanindu Hasaranga
- Pat Cummins
- Jaydev Unadkat
- Akash Maharaj Singh
- Jhathavedh Subramanyam
How the auction went:
Requirements before the auction: Overseas top-order batter, gun overseas pacer, overseas spinner (after releasing Adil Rashid)
Sunrisers Hyderabad had a clear plan going into the auction and successfully filled their vacant spots with quality overseas players. They made early aggressive moves to secure their targets.
Travis Head, the explosive Australian opener and Player of the Match in the World Cup final, is a fantastic addition to the squad after their slow starts last season. Pat Cummins, the second-most expensive player in IPL history, adds much-needed pace to the team, while Wanindu Hasaranga brings an upgrade to their spin department following the release of Adil Rashid.
Jhathavedh Subramanyan, a legspinner from the Tamil Nadu Premier League's Lyca Kovai Kings, was signed as a possible backup to Mayank Markande. Jaydev Unadkat, a left-arm pacer, provides another option in the fast bowling department and can serve as a backup to the injury-prone T Natarajan. Akash Maharaj Singh, who has previously played for RR and CSK, joins as another left-arm seamer to bolster the squad.
IPL 2024 Auction: How the teams fared
Rajasthan Royals
Players retained:
- Sanju Samson (c)
- Ravichandran Ashwin
- Yuzvendra Chahal
- Prasidh Krishna
- Navdeep Saini
- Avesh Khan (traded)
- Yashasvi Jaiswal
- Kuldeep Sen
- Sandeep Sharma
- Riyan Parag
- Dhruv Jurel

- Trent Boult
- Adam Zampa
- Shimron Hetmyer
- Donovan Ferreira
Players bought:
- Rovman Powell
- Shubham Dubey
- Tom Kohler-Cadmore
- Abid Mushtaq
- Nandre Burger
How the auction went:
Requirements before the auction: All-rounders, back-up Indian batter, back-up for Jos Buttler
Rajasthan Royals finished the auction with the smallest squad (22 out of a maximum of 25 players) and the least remaining purse (INR 20 lakh). This indicates a challenging auction for them.
In order to address Riyan Parag's poor performance in the previous IPL season, RR made a significant investment in Shubham Dubey, a 29-year-old finisher from Vidarbha. Dubey had an impressive run in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he scored 221 runs in seven matches at an average of 73.66 and a strike rate of 187.28.
Another key addition to their finisher options is Rovman Powell, the captain of the West Indies T20I team. Powell brings power-hitting abilities and potential bowling skills to the squad.
Nandre Burger, a left-arm seamer from South Africa who has performed well against India, seems to have been signed as a backup for Trent Boult. Tom Kohler-Cadmore, one of the five wicketkeepers in the team, adds versatility to the batting lineup with his ability to bat in the top six. Abid Mushtaq, a left-arm orthodox spin bowling all-rounder from Jammu & Kashmir, brings much-needed skills to the squad.
Chennai Super Kings
Players retained:

- Shaik Rasheed
Players bought:
- Daryl Mitchell
- Sameer Rizvi
- Mustafizur Rahman
- Rachin Ravindra
- Shardul Thakur
- Aravelly Avanish
How the auction went:
Requirements before the auction: All-rounder to replace Ben Stokes, Indian top-order batter to replace Ambati Rayudu, overseas pacer to share the workload with Matheesha Pathirana
Chennai Super Kings fulfilled their requirements and more during the auction. Although they were unable to secure Pat Cummins as a replacement for Ben Stokes, they managed to sign New Zealand all-rounder Daryl Mitchell, who brings power-hitting skills and experience. CSK outbid other teams to secure Mitchell's services.
To fill in Ambati Rayudu's spot, CSK overlooked experienced batters and placed their trust in Sameer Rizvi, a 20-year-old top-order batter from Uttar Pradesh. Rizvi has shown his talent in domestic T20 matches, with strong performances and an impressive strike rate.
While targeting Travis Head, CSK lost out to SRH in the bidding process. However, they managed to acquire Rachin Ravindra as a suitable alternative at a much lower price. Ravindra's presence offers flexibility in their batting lineup and adds spin bowling options alongside Moeen Ali.
For their desired overseas pacer, CSK initially looked at players like Gerald Coetzee and Alzarri Joseph but ultimately signed Mustafizur Rahman for his base price. Rahman's cutters and expertise could make him a valuable asset at Chepauk. Additionally, CSK brought back Shardul Thakur, a two-time IPL winner, to strengthen their Indian pace attack and provide further depth to their batting.
Overall, CSK successfully addressed their requirements and added depth to their squad.

Players bought:
- Azmatullah Omarzai
- Umesh Yadav
- Manav Suthar
- Shahrukh Khan
- Sushant Mishra
- Kartik Tyagi
- Spencer Johnson
- Robin Minz
How the auction went:
Requirements before the auction: Seam-bowling all-rounder, Indian wicket-keeping option, back-up pacers
Gujarat Titans had a few requirements before the auction, and they managed to address them quite well. However, with the numerous options available, finding the best eleven might pose a challenge for them.
They were highly interested in Mitchell Starc, but Kolkata Knight Riders outbid them for the pacer. As a backup for Joshua Little, the Titans opted for Australia's young left-arm pacer, Spencer Johnson, making him their most expensive buy of the auction at INR 10 Crore. To strengthen their Indian pacers, they also signed Umesh Yadav, Kartik Tyagi, and the relatively unknown Sushant Mishra.
Their middle-order options now include Azmatullah Omarzai from Afghanistan and Shahrukh Khan from Tamil Nadu, who was acquired for INR 7.4 Crore. However, finding the right balance in their playing eleven might require them to utilize the impact player rule to ensure a settled combination.
Lucknow Super Giants
Players retained:
- KL Rahul (c)
- Quinton de Kock
- Nicholas Pooran
- Ayush Badoni
- Deepak Hooda
- K Gowtham
- Kyle Mayers
- Marcus Stoinis
- Yudhvir Singh
- Mark Wood
- Mayank Yadav
- Mohsin Khan

- Naveen-ul-Haq
- Prerak Mankad
Players bought:
- Shivam Mavi
- Arshin Kulkarni
- Ashton Turner
- M Siddharth
- David Willey
- Mohammed Arshad Khan
How the auction went:
Requirements before the auction: Experienced Indian seamer, back-up in domestic batting department
Lucknow Super Giants had specific requirements before the auction, including an experienced Indian seamer and additional batting options. With limited purse and six slots to fill, their choices were constrained. However, they made a strong pick in uncapped all-rounder Arshin Kulkarni, a pace bowling all-rounder who can open the innings and provide balance to the team.
Although they were unable to acquire more domestic batting talents, they managed to sign Australian middle-order batter Ashton Turner. With KL Rahul and Nicholas Pooran already slotted in the middle order alongside Ayush Badoni, it remains to be seen where Turner fits into the team. This situation could potentially create an opportunity for Badoni to bat higher up the order. Another all-rounder added to the squad is David Willey, who brings versatility and value across all departments.
While they missed out on an experienced seamer, Lucknow Super Giants secured Shivam Mavi, who offers long-term value. M Siddharth, a useful defensive spinner, and Mohammed Arshad Khan, a rookie left-arm pacer, were the other additions to the team.
Overall, Lucknow Super Giants may not have had the ideal auction due to budget constraints, but they still possess a strong squad. The absence of an experienced Indian seamer remains a challenge for them.
