Siya Kolisi returns to South Africa to rejoin Sharks after Racing 92 contract cut short

Siya Kolisi, the Springboks captain, has made the decision to return to South Africa after spending only one season with Racing 92 in Paris. His contract with the French club was ended prematurely, leading him to announce his rejoining of the Sharks in Durban.

Kolisi's move to Racing 92 last summer on a lucrative three-year deal did not go as planned, as he faced challenges with form and fitness upon joining Stuart Lancaster's side. The flanker received public criticism from Racing's owner, Jacky Lorenzetti, following a disappointing season's end. Speculations arose that SA Rugby was working to negotiate an early release from his contract to bring him back to his home country.

On Sunday, Racing made the announcement that Kolisi's contract had been terminated two years ahead of schedule. In response, Kolisi expressed gratitude towards Racing 92 for allowing him to return home and for the opportunity to play overseas. He praised the club for its tradition, its impressive roster of players, and the camaraderie he built with his teammates.

In a statement, Kolisi shared, "My family and I have enjoyed a wonderful year abroad that has given us cherished memories. We have missed South Africa though, and it is time to come home." He continued, "I am excited to be returning to Durban to rejoin the Hollywoodbets Sharks. My family and I love Durban and its people, and I cannot wait to run out onto the park at Hollywoodbets Kings Park during the 2024-2025 rugby season."

Prior to his stint with Racing 92, Kolisi had spent two seasons with the Sharks after departing from the Stormers in 2021. His achievements include becoming only the second captain to win the World Cup twice last October. Additionally, he has played a key role with the Springboks this summer as they aim to secure a Rugby Championship title.

Kolisi's departure from Racing 92 coincided with a busy summer for the French club, which welcomed notable additions such as Owen Farrell. England's top Test points scorer made his Top 14 debut against Castres on Saturday, but his efforts were not enough to prevent a 31-28 defeat for Racing.

Siya Kolisi's return to South Africa marks a significant chapter in his career, as he reunites with the Sharks to continue his rugby journey. His leadership and experience will undoubtedly be valuable assets for the team as they gear up for future challenges on the field.
