Stolz, who had an outstanding performance at last year's World Championships with three titles to his name, set the record during a World Cup race held outside Salt Lake City. His remarkable time surpassed the previous record of 1 minute 5.69 seconds set by Pavel Kulizhnikov from Russia at the same venue in February 2020.
This achievement makes Stolz the first American since Brittany Bowe in March 2019 to set a world speedskating record in an individual event at the Utah oval. Additionally, it was the first time since December 2009 that a male speedskater from the United States, Shani Davis, had set a world record, specifically in the 1,500-meter event at Utah.
Stolz's remarkable success extends beyond this recent record-breaking performance. At the age of 18, he clinched world titles in the Netherlands last March in the 500, 1,000, and 1,500-meter distances. His extraordinary achievements made him the first man to win three individual titles at a single world championship. He also holds the distinction of being the youngest world single distance world champion in history, as well as the first to win both world and world junior titles in the same year for all three distances.
