Tom Curran handed four-match ban in BBL for intimidating umpire

Tom Curran, the England pace bowler representing Sydney Sixers in the current Big Bash League (BBL), has been handed a four-match ban following a level-3 offence for intimidating an umpire. Cricket Australia (CA) established Curran's guilt, but the Sixers have declared their intention to "vigorously appeal" the sanction.

The incident occurred just prior to the start of the Sixers' recent game against the Hobart Hurricanes in Launceston on December 11. According to Cricket Australia, Curran was in the process of completing a practice run-up on the pitch during the teams' pre-match drills. This action prompted the fourth umpire to intervene and prevent Curran from entering the pitch, hence sparking the altercation.

In a statement, CA explained, "The umpire took position next to the stumps, blocking Curran from approaching the pitch and gestured to Curran to move away from the pitch." The statement continued, "Curran was seen in the footage gesturing to the umpire to move away from the pitch. Curran then attempted to perform a practice run-up and run at pace straight towards the umpire who stood in the bowling crease facing Curran. The umpire stepped to his right to avoid the risk of collision."

Following the incident, Curran was charged under article 2.17 of the code of conduct by match referee Bob Parry. This article pertains to "intimidation or attempted intimidation of an umpire, match referee or medical personnel, whether by language or conduct (including gestures) during a match." Although Curran contested the charge, he was found guilty, resulting in a ban of four suspension points, which translates to missing four BBL games.

The Sydney Sixers have stated their intention to appeal the sanction. Rachael Haynes, the Head of Sixers, expressed support for Curran and explained, "Tom and the club maintain that Tom did not knowingly or intentionally intimidate a match official, and on legal advice, we will exercise our right to appeal the decision." Haynes added, "We will support Tom during this period and look forward to him returning to the field."

This incident has once again brought the issue of player misconduct to the forefront of discussions in cricket.
