Nigeria Clinch Last-16 Spot with Victory over Guinea-Bissau at AFCON

Nigeria secured their place in the last 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations with a 1-0 win against Guinea-Bissau. An own goal by Guinea-Bissau's Opa Sangante proved to be the decisive moment of the match. Nigeria finished second in Group A and will now face the runners-up from Group C in the knockout stage. Despite their dominance, Nigeria missed several chances to extend their lead.

In a thrilling match at the Africa Cup of Nations, Nigeria secured their place in the last 16 with a 1-0 victory over Guinea-Bissau. The lone goal came courtesy of an own goal by Guinea-Bissau's Opa Sangante in the 36th minute.

The Super Eagles had been dominant throughout the first half, but it was Sangante's unfortunate intervention that broke the deadlock. Moses Simon's cross was met by Sangante, who inadvertently turned the ball into his own net while trying to prevent Victor Osimhen from scoring.

With this win, Nigeria finished second in Group A with seven points, behind Equatorial Guinea. Equatorial Guinea's impressive 4-0 victory over hosts Ivory Coast secured them the top spot in the group due to their superior goal difference.

Nigeria's campaign in the tournament got off to a slow start with a 1-1 draw against Equatorial Guinea in their opening game. However, they bounced back with a 1-0 victory over Ivory Coast, thanks to a William Troost-Ekong penalty. The win against Guinea-Bissau further solidified their place in the knockout stage.

Jose Peseiro's team will now face the runners-up from Group C in the last 16. The potential opponents include Senegal, Guinea, or Cameroon. The match will be held at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan on Saturday.

Although Nigeria dominated the game, they failed to capitalize on their chances in the second half. Osimhen and substitute Zaidu Sanusi both had goals disallowed for offside, while Calvin Bassey's penalty appeal was turned down. Ola Aina also missed a good opportunity to extend Nigeria's lead.

Guinea-Bissau, who were already eliminated before the match, fought bravely but were unable to find the back of the net. Franculino Dju's goal was ruled out, adding to their disappointment. Despite their strong showing in qualifying, where they stunned Nigeria with a win, Guinea-Bissau have yet to claim a victory in 12 attempts across four appearances at the Cup of Nations.

Nigeria's performance in the group stage has been solid, if not spectacular. They will need to step up their game in the knockout stage if they want to go far in the tournament. With the likes of Osimhen and Troost-Ekong leading the way, the Super Eagles have the talent and potential to make a deep run in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Fans will be eagerly awaiting Nigeria's last-16 match to see if they can continue their journey towards lifting the trophy.
