Sinner and NextGen Tennis Stars Share Belief in Grand Slam Success

Melbourne (AFP) - Jannik Sinner, the emerging tennis star, believes that the new generation of players share a strong belief in their abilities, evident through his recent victory over Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open.

Sinner's dominant performance saw him dethrone the ten-time champion with a 6-1, 6-2, 6-7 (6/8), 6-3 win on Rod Laver Arena. He will now face either Daniil Medvedev or Alexander Zverev in the title decider, guaranteeing a new name on the trophy this year.

At the age of 22, Sinner, along with fellow 20-year-olds Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune, represents the rising stars aiming to challenge the established elite led by Djokovic, who secured three out of four Grand Slam titles last year. Alcaraz has already clinched two Grand Slams, while Sinner hopes to add his first at Melbourne Park on Sunday.

Sinner expressed, "We, Carlos, Holger, and I, are all different players in many ways. Our mental approach and attitudes on the court also vary. However, we share a common belief in ourselves, which plays a significant role. When you have belief in tennis, it holds immense value."

The Italian player acknowledged the fortunate opportunity to witness the presence and practice routines of 24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic, which served as a valuable role model for the younger generation.

"We are truly fortunate to have him around, observing his actions, and understanding his work ethic," Sinner said. "Hopefully, Rafa (Nadal) will make a return soon so that I can also observe his game. Unfortunately, I have never had the chance to see Roger (Federer) in person, but these are the circumstances we face."

Sinner attributed his faith in performing well in major tournaments to a strong finish in the 2023 season, where he achieved two wins against Djokovic. However, he remains aware that actions speak louder than words.

"People may talk a lot, but ultimately, you have to prove it on the court when you go out and play," Sinner mentioned. "If it doesn't happen this year, there's always the next year, and even the year after that. I am genuinely relaxed, focusing on working hard. I firmly believe that hard work pays off, and we are all striving to achieve our dreams."
